for mobile device users
Location services are disabled by default. Enable Zoom or Track by pressing one of the buttons...
Zoom is a locate-once feature that will centre the map on your current physical location and temporarily mark it on the map for five seconds, after which you can resume your own navigation around the map with mouse or touch.
Track will do the same as Zoom, but the marker will persist and be updated continuously as you move around, automatically shifting the map display to follow you. This will continue until you switch off tracking or leave the website.
The location icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen will show red when tracking is active. To stop tracking, press the icon again. The icon is grey when tracking is inactive.
Zoom and Track are opt-in features and are not required to navigate the map. Location information is only used to mark your location on the map. No personally identifiable information is captured and tracking data is not retained. This feature requires the location service on your device to be enabled and, if prompted, you to allow this website to know your location.
This site is designed to be used on any device, from smartphone to desktop computer. It displays a navigable map of Historic England-listed sites, colour-coded by century of original construction. The colours start at red for structures of the 13th century and earlier and step up through the rainbow to a pale violet for 19th and 20th-century sites.
Click or touch a coloured shape or point to display a small popup with some basic info for that site. Another click or touch on that popup will display a larger popup with more detailed information and image(s).
This site is part of the Gloucester500 project to photograph all the near 500 sites in Gloucester listed by Historic England. If Gloucester's heritage is important to you, please support the Gloucester Civic Trust.
'Bygone' markers operate the same system of popups, but display photos or paintings of scenes that no longer exist.
Mobile users can use their device's geo-location service to mark their location on the map, either as a once-only location fix or a continuously updated fix that follows their movement through the mapped area. Geo-location is disabled by default and must be opted into. More info and activation can be found by clicking or touching the location icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
This site does not store cookies. No personally identifiable information is captured during your use of this site. This remains the case if you choose to activate geo-location features.
